The beacon controller is contained in a small plastic case.
The board on the right is the beacon controller; a FREAKIN' BEACON by Expanded Spectrum Systems. It controls all the functions of the main beacon transmitter. The other board is the original beacon transmitter which is now used as a backup.
The beacon transmitter.
The beacon transmitter is a converted RadioShack 27 Mhz pager transmitter. After changing the crystal it was retuned and set to output 1/2 watt. Heat sinks were added as well as a small fan to keep things cool.
The beacon antenna is a 1/4 wave ground plane vertical on a 15 foot mast.
